Thriller is a genre of fiction in which tough, resourceful, but essentially ordinary heroes are pitted against villains determined to destroy them, their country, or the stability of the free world.
Part of the allure of thrillers comes from not only what their stories are about, but also how they are told. High stakes, non-stop action, plot twists that both surprise and excite, settings that are both vibrant and exotic, and an intense pace that never lets up until the adrenalin packed climax.

Website link

Today i continued working on my website, it took a lot of the lesson to get my links to Facebook and twitter working. I have also finally put my website online making it public for viewing, although it's still very rough and theres a lot of things that need to be changed and improved upon. I will continue working on this alongside my evaluations for the next few weeks through my free time. After doing this i am hoping to focus the majority of my efforts onto the evaluation.

Moral Panics & Hoodie Culture

Due to the main theme in my thriller opening being revolved around hoodie, or gang culture, I have decided to do a blog post into my research into it and the moral panics surrounding.

  •  Moral panics are an intense feeling of fear expressed by the whole population, an example of this would be the global warming scare or the fear of hooded teenagers and youth gangs.
  • These panics are normally heavily influenced by the media due to the fact that fear sells.
  • Moral panics are not new; these have been going on since the dark ages,  although fuled by religion rather then the media witch hunts are an example of a moral panic.
For further information click Here

Hoodie culture ties strongly into the theme of moral panics due to the association of fear. Due the the medias constant feed on negative story's following hooded attackers and crime an association between the two has been created Aka, a moral panic.

The word "Hoodie" originated from hooded workers in the united states who wore hoods due to the freezing temperatures they endured working. However later became adopted by HipHop culture and became a garment associated with style.

Hoodie Culture In the Uk

In the UK hoodys have become commonly associated with crime, theft and anonymity due to it's use in thefts and  wide availability. They also act as a defense mechanism for the younger generation by creating fear  they avoid feeling undermined by there elders.

Points and facts revolving around the hoodie label
  • Angela McRobbie, professor of communications at Goldsmiths College in the UK, says the appeal of the hoodie is because of its promise of anonymity, mystery and anxiety. "The point of origin is obviously black American hip-hop culture, now thoroughly mainstream and a key part of the global economy.
  •  In July 2006, David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, made a speech suggesting that the hoodie was worn more for defensive than offensive purposes. The speech was referred to as "hug a hoodie" by the Labor Party.

From this information it was possible for me to get a grasp on how society views hooded youths and therefore possible to  get a better grasp on the fear i was needing to create in my thriller opening.

Evaluation Part 1 (Planning)

As initial planning of our evaluation we looked at the 7 questions which we will have to answer:

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
3) What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
5) How did you attract/address your audience?
6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression for it to the main task?

Me and Lew have spent the lesson planning out our response to question 1 creating a set of lists divided into different the three different categories inside question one. How it uses, challenges, and develops conventions. Using this devised we have structured a possible response to question one which we shall later develop into an essay.

thriller effects list.

Live type

In today's lesson i explored using live type, this is a program which lets you create titles or any other kind of animated text. U used this to produce the titles for our thriller film as we had a 4 second slot.Only long enough for  a short title. The titles were going to initially spread across across the opening twelve seconds, however we changed this as we didn't want to take anything away from the crucial few opening seconds.
By using Live-type I was able to see different effects on different fonts and find one which suited the title we wanted on our thriller.

Initially i started with using a red colour to the text font, however after adding in the effect 'frigid' which gave the effect i wanted this colour didn't seem to fit. This was due to the blue flash appearing from behind the font, this helped give the effect an unsettling nature. However as this clashed with the red i substituted the colour with white, this gave the text a great feeling, however this still seemed incomplete.

  • In this box on the left you can see the ways to adjust colour
  • Following this the box on the right shows the effects i used and the list i chose them from. In the box on the left on this screenshot you can see i have two highlighted this is because i believed it would work better with a fade in.

This is the final title as it fades in with a blue highlight although you cannot see the effect on this image it still shows the font and colours used.

Draft 2

This is the second draft of our thriller film, we uploaded this to youtube using medium quality due to the limited time left of the lesson. It would of taken too long to upload a full quality draft. This has however shown us how vast the difference is between upload options on youtube. This dose however suffice as a draft showing the progress we have made through production.

Parts we have added

  • Running scenes throughout the opening.
  • Beating scene, second half
  • Car Arriving
We will soon be uploading the video however into a newer version of final-cut, final-cut X Using this software we are hoping to be able to add in the dubbed audio. other sound effects and a a little tweaking along with special effects and filters.
